On Friday, June 17, 2011, Anne Arundel County's Office of Emergency Management in partnership with Department of Social Services, American Red Cross, Department of Health, Police and Fire Departments, RACES and Animal Control hosted a Full-Scale Shelter Exercise at Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD. Over 100 volunteers gave up their morning to help the County test Emergency Sheltering capabilities. The exercise simulated an F4 Tornado hitting parts of Edgewater and Annapolis, and causing extensive damage, loss of power, and several fatalities. Volunteers portrayed the disaster victims, some of whom had medical and emotional issues, while others were searching for loved ones. Animal Control was able to assist 5 disaster victims with housing their pets on-sight. Many lessons learned, as well as several best practices were documented. Anne Arundel County will use this exercise to modify plans and procedures, and implement any changes needed so that the County can successfully implement any future shelters. The County Office of Emergency Management thanks everyone for volunteering their time and for County staff's hard work in making this exercise a success.
